An accelerator facility for intermediate energy proton irradiation and testing of nuclear materials

The bulk irradiation of materials with 10-30 MeV protons promises to advance the study radiation damage for fission and fusion power plants. Intermediate energy proton beams can now be dedicated within university-scale laboratories. This paper describes first such facility, an Ionetix ION-12SC cyclotron producing 12 beams. Samples are mm-scale tensile specimens thicknesses up 300 um, mounted a cooled beam target control over temperature. A specialized tester radioactive at high temperature (500+ {\deg}C) and/or vacuum represents conditions in systems, while digital image correlation system remotely measures strain. Overall, facility provides testing capability intermediate complement traditional in-core reactor micro-scale ion irradiation. demonstrates that is scalable effective approach nuclear research, down-selection, qualification.
